Estonia Gets First Gender Studies Textbook
Although Estonia has pursued gender research for many years, the popular sociological field of study has been fragmented between universities, which has led to a misunderstanding of the topic, ERR radio reported.
“We no longer have to rely on platitudes or integrated perceptions, yet [base studies] on deep and profound material [found in the book], which covers all important areas of life, starting from women’s representation in politics and media, the female role in a family and very narrow topics such as ecofeminism,” said Mari Kodres, media manager at the Open Estonia Foundation, that has supported the undertaking.
According to Raili Marling, professor at the University of Tartu and editor of the textbook, while assembling the material, people discussed subjects which often are not associated with gender analysis. “We are accustomed to thinking about gender when discussing politics, yet do we associate gender affecting religion and environment?” said Marling.
