Estonian-Russian cooperation in combating violence against women and children

How to combat violence targeted against women and children is at the heart of the project taking place in Tartu this week. The study visits and seminars are attended by representatives of civil society organizations and local government authorities from the Pskov and St. Petersburg oblasts, the Tartu Child Support Centre and Estonia’s Southern Circuit Prosecutor’s Office.

The aim of the three-day visit is to increase the specialists’ knowledge about problems related to family violence and develop local and international networks uniting organizations that deal with women and children who are victims of some form of violence on a daily basis. One of the most important objectives of the meeting is to create opportunities for cooperation between specialists from the two countries. Violence is a general problem, which is why the main emphasis of the event is on creating international cooperation ties between the two neighbouring states.

In Estonia, one in five women is the victim of physical, psychological or sexual violence. “The fight against violence can never be effective without cooperation between government structures and civil society and thus it is very important to support such projects and help specialists create contacts with their colleagues in other countries,” says the director of the Open Estonia Foundation Mall Hellam.

The project is financed by the Open Estonia Foundation under the East- East Partnership Beyond Borders Program.
