European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights

Within the next fortnight the European Commission is due to launch a new set of calls for proposals for the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR ) that will deal with:

  1. the promotion of democracy, good governance and the rule of law;
  2. the prevention of torture;
  3. the rehabilitation of torture victims;
  4. the promotion of international justice;
  5. and combating the death penalty.

For the first time, the Commission will use a two-stage application process where applicants submit an initial concept paper and overall budget rather than a fully detailed proposal as has previously been the case. Their stated aim is to reduce the initial burden of work and cost to applicants and increase the chance of success in the later stage. The Commission has produced a brief overview of this new procedure
