World Day 2006 will take place in the Tammsaare Park in Tallinn
PRESS RELEASE
11.09.2006
The event will be opened by Urmas Paet, the Estonian minister of Foreign Affairs, with a speech at 12.00 on 16th of September 2006. The event will be focusing on problems and challenges faced by developing countries in the current world order and what could be done about it.
The heart of the World Day will be the Discussion tent, where people can listen and take part in the debate "Why countries develop differently". The discussion will start at 13.00 and among many other speakers Urmas Paet (Minister of Foreign Affairs), Toomas Savi (Member of the European Parliament) and Marko Mihkelson (Vice-chairman of the Foreign Committee of the Parliament) will participate. Later on in the same tent you can listen to Estonians who have lived in developing countries and will share their experiences and impressions. There will be information about Fair Trade and discussions about the situation in Belarus and more.
About twenty local and international organizations who are connected with developing cooperation activities will introduce themselves . A special Youth area hosts an animation workshop organized by Kinobuss and a "Living Library" which will mark the start of the campaign "All equal, all different" in Estonia. Many bands will perform on the main stage in the middle of the park where you will be able to listen to the Egyptian solo-artist Aladin Abbhas, the Universaal Univerums djembe-drummers and many others.
According to the words of the project manager Marje Pihlak their main goal is to call for people to think about development cooperation.
"This event is concentrating on introducing internationally accepted development goals, such as eradicating extreme poverty and hunger for example. While many problems still remain we should recognize efforts taken both in the South and the North to reach these goals and continue to give our support," explained Pihlak.
The World Day is organized by the Roundtable for Development Cooperation in collaboration with the Estonian European Movement and the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Roundtable for Development Cooperation is an open forum of NGOs and experts for advocacy, public awareness and joint development projects. The organization acts as a national platform for development NGOs in Estonia. The Roundtable for Development Cooperation informs its members about development news, facilitates participation in seminars, trainings and field studies, and cooperates with similar networks in Europe.
