Capture Freedom! - OEF's Photography Contest

The Open Estonia Foundation (OEF) invites everyone to participate in the photo contest „Freedom in Our Backyard” and take pictures of things, events and people that illustrate freedom or its absence in today’s Estonia. Participation is open to everyone living in Estonia, regardless of age, citizenship, occupation or photographic skills.

“Freedom is easy to cherish when there’s a lack of it,” Mall Hellam, OEF’s Executive Director explains, “but how often do we stop to think about freedom in a society that is formally free?”. The Open Estonia Foundation encourages people to think about the meaning of freedom in today’s world and capture the different faces of liberty and civil rights.

The contest will be open until September 5th, 11.59 p.m. and three of the most interesting photos will be awarded a prize of 3000 Estonian kroons.

The photos can be seen in public at the end of September at the photo exhibition “Shadows of Empire” by Mary Frances Lindstrom, the Open Society Institute’s East-East: Partnership Beyond Borders Program Director. Her photographs taken in Estonia and other former Soviet countries over the past 20 years highlight the long shadows cast by the former Soviet empire and the changes at and within its borders.
