TOWARD DIGITAL COMMUNITIES IN LITHUANIA

Open Society Fund-Lithuania

"Steps toward Digital Communities in Lithuania," an initiative of the OSFL Information Program, has been nominated by the Information Society Development Committee of the Lithuanian government as the best initiative of 2004 aimed at decreasing the information exclusion of rural communities. The initiative involves the creation and implementation of a model for encouraging small communities to use ICT as a civic participation tool, the building of networks to share best practices and discuss community development issues, and the provision of consultations and training. RE:FINE 2005 CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Education Support Program, OSI-Budapest

ESP has announced the 2005 call for proposals for RE:FINE. This education fund supports special projects to further open society goals in four priority areas: accountability, equity, anticorruption, and the improvement of learning outcomes that support open society values. RE:FINE provides strategic grants for networking projects in education in South Eastern Europe, Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Mongolia. FACULTY DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM 2006

Applications for the 2006 Faculty Development Fellowship Program are currently being accepted from qualified citizens of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. This program seeks to enhance the academic careers of outstanding full-time junior faculty teaching art history, cultural anthropology, history, law, philosophy, political science, religion, or sociology. Awards provide support for up to three non-consecutive semesters at a US university, where the grantees will create innovative approaches to reform in their fields of specialization, and develop regional and international institutional partnerships. The Robert Bosch Foundation, together with the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, the Bernhard van Leer Foundation, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the German Federal Foundation for the Environment, and the Trust for Civil Society in CEE, has announced the first call for applications for the International Fellowship Programme for Central and Eastern European Foundations and NGOs. The Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education of Charles University and the Economics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (CERGE-EI) in Prague invites interested persons to apply to its program of doctoral studies in theoretical and applied economics, leading to a PhD degree which is fully accredited in the United States and the Czech Republic. The program's main mission is to improve the economic conditions of countries in transition, and most students come from these countries. All students are granted tuition waivers and monthly stipends for up to four years of study. Application deadline: March 30, 2005
