Prime Minister complimented OEF’s work on social integration

The Open Estonia Foundation, celebrating its 20th anniversary this week, met the Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip yesterday to discuss current developments in society and OEF’s future plans. Ansip recognized the foundation’s work in minority integration issues, and was especially interested in the ongoing mentoring program, which offers Russian-speaking teachers a possibility to learn Estonian with the help of personal mentors.

Open Estonia Foundation 20

The Open Estonia Foundation today celebrates its 20th anniversary. Due to flight cancellations all over Europe, the XV Open Society Forum scheduled for today will be postponed. However, regardless of the weather conditions a brand new book "Becoming Estonia" was published yesterday, telling OEF's history through enjoyable stories and photos.

Ivar Tallo Received OEF's Concord Award

The Open Estonia Foundation yesterday announced the laureate of the traditional Concord award, which is dedicated to OEF’s 20th anniversary this year. Ivar Tallo, political scientist and former politician, received the award for promoting open governance, freedom of speech and electronic democracy in Estonia and abroad. He is also leading Estonia’s cooperation with Haiti on building e-democracy in the Carribean country – a project currently on hold due to the earthquake in January.

Young People Design European Energy Policy

At the initiative of the Open Estonia Foundation, a 4-day workshop Young Ideas for Europe started today at the Tallinn Jewish School, involving students from Estonian- and Russian-language schools. As a result of the workshop, participants from the Tallinn Jewish School, Haabersti Russian Secondary School and Leisi Secondary School will formulate a joint Action Plan: New Energy for Europe for 2020.

Lyudmila Alexeyeva: Civil Society in Russia Strongly Emerging

Currently there is more civil action in Russia than one might think, the recognized Russian human rights defender Lyudmila Alexeyeva said yesterday at the public discussion organized by the Open Estonia Foundation. She predicts that due to wide public opposition the Moscow authorities will drop their plan to display posters of Stalin in the city during the celebrations of Victory Day in May this year. At the same time Alexeyeva considers Russia to be far from democracy.

Russian Human Rights Defender Lyudmila Alexeyeva in Tallinn Today

Lyudmila Alexeyeva, the legendary Russian human rights activist, former Soviet dissident and laureate of the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Though will hold a public lecture in Tallinn today. The debate „Russian Voices“, organized by the Open Estonia Foundation (OEF), will focus on the situation of human rights and recent political developments in Russia. During her 3-day stay, Alexeyeva will also meet the Estonian president Toomas Hendrik Ilves, members of Parliament and former Soviet Estonian dissidents.

Russian Teachers Share Unique Language-learning Experiences

51 teachers from Estonian Russian-speaking schools and their mentors will gather to a forum in Tallinn today to share their experiences in learning Estonian. For half a year, a unique pilot project of the Open Estonia Foundation, British Council and the Integration and Migration Foundation “Our People” has enabled Russian-speaking teachers to practice Estonian with the help of personal mentors at their chosen pace and place – in cafés, skiing track or via Skype.

EU Financial Support for Cultural Cooperation Projects with Third Countries

The EU's Culture Programme annually supports cultural cooperation projects between the EU and a selected number of third countries. Deadline for projects starting between 1 November 2010 and 31 October 2011 is the 3 May 2010.

OEF Helps Students from EU Eastern Partnership Countries

The Open Estonia Foundation (OEF) will support the studies of 11 students from Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine at Estonian universities on spring semester 2010. The scholarships will help students from the EU Eastern Partnership countries tackle the effects of the economic crisis, which has severely cut national scholarship programs and family budgets.

The „Humanitarian Dimension“ of Russian Foreign Policy Toward Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Baltic States

Last week, the International Centre for Defence Studies (Estonia) presented their new book titled The ‘Humanitarian Dimension’ of Russian Foreign Policy Toward Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and the Baltic States. The book is a collection of research results based on six countries and the first attempt to analyse the so-called ‘humanitarian dimension’ of Russian foreign policy and its implementation in these countries.
